Akron Social Security Attorney
Akron was originally founded in 1825 as part of the development of the Ohio and Erie Canals. Akron’s first industries were the manufacture of stoneware, fishing tackle, farming equipment, and sewer pipes. In the late 1800s the toy industry was birthed at the Akron Toy Company, where clay marbles, balloons, rubber ducks, dolls, and balls were all manufactured. At the turn of the century, Akron began to grow at a furious pace, becoming a center for the cereal and toy industries as well as becoming the country’s leading location for the manufacture of tires. With easy access to canals, railroads, and highways, Akron had no trouble distributing its manufactured goods to the rest of the country.
At one time, Akron was known as “Tire City” because four major tire manufacturers were headquartered there. When the tire and rubber industries began to decline in the 1970s, Akron’s tire manufacturers closed, leaving only Goodyear by the early 1990s. One of the most famous products made in Akron were the Zeppelin airships manufactured for use in World War II. Zeppelins were later used as “blimps” for advertising. The city is now home to over 90 polymer-related companies out of the almost 400 such companies located in the area. Polymer research is pursued at the University of Akron, the National Polymer Innovation Center, and the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering.
Akron has had its share of historical residents and historical moments. The abolitionist John Brown lived there in the 1840s, and Sojourner Truth gave her famous Ain’t I A Woman speech at the 1851 Women’s Rights Convention. Clark Gable called Akron home, being a member of one of the many immigrant families that came to the area in the early part of the 1900s. The criminal “Pretty Boy” Floyd was arrested at one of his Akron hideouts in 1930.
Applying for Akron Social Security Disability Benefits
Akron’s population hovers at about 215,000. Most residents are of Caucasian descent. The city’s largest minority is African-American. 34% of the city’s residents are at least age 45. A quarter of Akron’s children live below the poverty line, as do almost 10% of its retirees. 13% of the city’s Social Security benefits recipients are disabled.
If you are a disabled Akron resident who decides to apply for Social Security Disability benefits, you may find yourself embroiled in a time-consuming, confusing, and frustrating process. In order to receive disability benefits, you must prove that you have a disability that has lasted, or is expected to last, at least 12 months, and whose effects prevent you from working. Your disability needs to meet the specific requirements of the listings in the SSA’s Blue Book. You must also present medical records to document your disability, its treatment, and your response to treatment. There is usually a lengthy waiting period before the SSA reviews your application, and most initial disability applications are denied, not only at the initial review but also upon reconsideration. The third step in the process is to appeal your case to an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ).

If you pursue your case, your Akron Social Security Disability lawyer can assist you with respect to organizing and presenting your case. The SSA limits legal fees to the lesser of 25% of your back benefits or $6,000. You do not have to pay legal fees unless your claim is approved.
Your Akron Social Security attorney will help you complete the paperwork associated with your application or your appeal and will request the required medical records, asking for additional documents from your doctors or health clinics. If your case does go to the appeals level, your Akron disability lawyer can represent you before the ALJ and help you understand the proceedings.
